Visibility in Miner Tracking Solutions
- A common scenario involves achieving visibility, which means knowing the presence and location of individuals within a mine.
- This doesn’t require pinpoint accuracy but rather awareness of the general area a person is in.
- Zone-based tracking simplifies setup, making it cost-effective and reliable.
Attendance Registration
- The primary task for miner tracking safety is registering entries and exits.
- Entry/exit points are equipped with RFID readers capable of high-speed, simultaneous reading of multiple tags.
- In larger mines, transferring groups of staff via buses is common, and every individual on board must be registered.
Digital Mine Tracking Suite
IoT Sensors and Wireless Network:
- Integrates Internet of Things (IoT) sensors for comprehensive data collection.
- Utilizes a wireless network for seamless connectivity in mining environments.
Real-Time Monitoring:
- Enables real-time monitoring of underground mine parameters for enhanced safety and operational efficiency.
Audio-Visual Alert Systems:
- Issues audio-visual alerts not only to workers inside the mines but also to officials at on-site locations, project offices, or remote centers.

Digitizing the mining Operations
Zone Based Tracking

Zone-based RFID in mining involves RFID tags worn by miners and RFID readers positioned at known locations within entries. Each miner’s tag transmits a unique identifier, and when the miner passes within the RFID range of a reader, the tag responds to the reader’s signal.
RFID Tags and Readers:
- Miners wear RFID tags transmitting unique identifiers.
- RFID readers positioned in entries read tags when miners are within range.
Communication to MOC:
- Reader relays detection information to the mine operations center (MOC).
Unique Identification and Location:
- Each RFID reader has a unique identification and associated location.
- MOC determines a miner’s location based on the reader’s RF range.
Zone-Based RFID:
- Miner’s location is determined within the RF range of a specific reader.
- Displayed in the MOC as text or on a mine map, indicating the miner’s proximity to a known reader’s location.
Reverse RFID Tracking

In reverse-RFID tracking, miners wear the reader, and RFID tags are fixed in known locations. This approach is cost-effective as RFID tags are inexpensive. Tags can be closely positioned for precise miner location compared to zone-based systems with readers spaced farther apart. The RFID reader, worn by the miner, transmits location data to the mine operations center (MOC) through a radio transmitter and backhaul communication system.
RFID Tag Transmission:
- The RFID tag is programmed to periodically transmit its identification information.
Separate Antenna on Miner’s Cap:
- A separate antenna may be mounted on the miner’s cap to receive the RFID tag signal.
Transferring RFID Information:
- The received RFID information is then transferred to the transmitter located on the miner’s belt.
Relaying to Leaky Feeder Cable:
- The transmitter on the miner’s belt relays the RFID information to the leaky feeder cable.
UHF Transmitter on Miner’s Belt:
- A UHF transmitter, also mounted on the miner’s belt, is responsible for transmitting the location information to the leaky feeder cable.
